maggie’s top 10 of 2013

maggie's top 10 of 2013

1 – i remembered that i had eyebrows this year, and that it might be nice to take care of them and even highlight them every once in awhile. it cosmetics brow power perfector is the 5-in-1 powder gel pencil that came to my brow rescue, serving as a fill-in powder, pencil, taming gel, conditioning treatment, and brow brush all in one (i’ve been using the the ‘universal taupe’ shade to define and fill in my arches).

2 – i briefly noted my love for the stella by stella mccartney rollerball perfume here, but the quick mention does not do nearly enough justice to how much i use this bad boy. the sweet and subtle combo of rose, amber and mandarin is my daily perfume and in my purse at all times.

3 – who knew that a free birthday gift from sephora would become one of my top ten beauty staples this year? i swipe benefit’s watt’s up! highlighter under my brows and on my cheekbones every day to wake my face up.

4 – sally hansen’s super shine has become a favorite for DIY manicures. i know matte nails were trendy this past year, but i still love a shiny fnish, and this top coat does the trick (while really making color last – we’re talking a solid five days).

5 – maybelline’s color elixir in signature scarlet has become my new go-to red lip, adding a glossy, youthful twist to an always classic look.

6 – the super dark, completely clump-free and layer-able smashbox photo op eye brightening mascara is now my daily mascara – i love how it separates and defines each lash. a blend of blue pigments in the formula make lashes seems so defined in contrast to the whites of your eyes. i haven’t found a mascara this good since dior’s diorshow.

7 – i’m a sucker for celebrity endorsements, so when i heard about lauren conrad’s hair stylist’s can’t-live-without product, i had to get my hands on it. i’ve been spritzing healthy sexy hair soy tri-wheat leave-in conditioner on after every shower and i am loving the results: soft, noticeably shinier locks (but never greasy). by restoring hair’s ph balance, it essentially presses the “restart” button for your hair. since i’ve started using it i’ve had multiple friends ask me if i’ve gotten my hair cut – that’s how healthy and fresh it’s made my hair look.

8 – like lara, i’ve become addicted to simple’s revitalizing eye roll-on. it’s become my little morning wake-up ritual, after i’ve washed my face and moisturized, to sweep this cooling rollerball underneath my eyes. it de-puffs, wakes me up immediately and is the perfect primer for my undereye concealer.

9 – speaking of undereye concealer, benefit’s fake up was my new best friend in 2013. this super moisturizing concealer hides even the darkest of my circles, and, as it promises, never creases. what a welcome addition to my makeup bag!

10 – i’d heard so much about the magical josie maran pure argan oil, and i have to say it lives up to its reputation. a single drop of it on damp hair makes me feel like my split ends have disappeared, and no other product has made my hair feel quite this silky. the double-whammy oil can also be used to moisturize your skin and has been a lifesaver for my dry winter cuticles.

a few recent favorites

a few recent favorites

i’ve been a little testing machine lately and sometimes there is just TOO much goodness to share at once. rather than keep you waiting while i craft individual posts for each of these pretty products, i’ve mashed them into one gorgeous little group. i hope you like what you see!

beautyblender, $19.95
is anyone else a complete sucker for the beauty to go section at sephora? this not-at-all-new pink sponge totally captured me and it was way beyond time that i gave it a try. i have used it both wet and dry to apply my favorite cc cream and i have to say that it has never been faster or easier to flawlessly blend my foundation. i’ve been using the blendercleanser to keep it clean and, well, i may just toss my brushes forever.

kiehl’s multi super-corrective cream, $62
talk about a major upgrade to my fall face care, this ultra thick yet still non-greasy cream from kiehl’s is super luxe. it glides on to my skin and has a slight optical blurring effect. it soothes my tight post-shower skin and it’s thick enough that i can use it as an eye cream at night. it’s extremely hydrating but it leaves my skin matte so it feels like i’ve got nothing on. my foundation blends seamlessly over top and my face feels comfy all day long.

balm chicky sweet baby ginger balm balm, $12
you guys, this stuff is GORGEOUS! the balm chicky line of cheeky balms is too cute for words. they are chunky and oversized (reminding me of my favorite bath & body works balms of the 90’s) and the flavors are to DIE for – melon, cucumber, hot chocolate, honey. yum! best of all each tube has a “friend end” for sharing. they are hydrating and flavorful, and way too much fun. if you know what’s good for you, you will def check these out.

sally hansen fuzzy coat in tight knit, $6.99
this polish was the hero in yesterday’s textured nail art post. it was definitely way outside of my normal nail repertoire but i’m so happy that i gave it a test run because they are really great. you can layer them over your favorite solid shade, put them on bare nails, or even “sandwich” them together different jelly polishes for a fun effect. they were a surprisingly long time and they’re a cinch to remove. definitely a fun little update!

lulu organics jasmine travel hair powder, $9.50
another star from the beautyhabit collection, this hair powder is a fabulous little upgrade on my current go-to. it’s silky and talc-free and its tiny size is beyond perfect for keeping handy on the go. on day two, i often find myself with a need to powder up late in the day as opposed to first thing in the morning. this is so easy to work with in a restaurant bathroom (or wherever you find yourself) and the jasmine scent is delightful.

josie maran argan cream blush, $22
i don’t know where this pretty golden compact filled with soft pink perfection has been hiding, but i sure am thrilled to have discovered it. finally someone has created a cream blush that blends into skin without just sitting on top. the sunrise color is gorgeous, leaving me with a natural glowy flush that lasts all day long. my skin absolutely loves something about the argan oil and i love that it doesn’t “fight” my foundation. pretty, pretty, pretty.

america the beautiful

america the beautiful

happy 4th my gorgeous girls and boys! i hope you’re all enjoying a day off to celebrate with barbecues, fireworks, and (in our case) a fierce corn hole competition (of which we are the reigning champions).

beauty product selection can be tricky on a day when we are often subject to blistering heat and lots of sunshine. i’ve got several favorites to survive the day in style:

perricone md photo plasma, $69
this oil-free spf moisturizer is the bomb. it’s mousse-like in texture, boasts spf 30, absorbs lightning fast and works as a killer makeup primer. definitely my favorite facial sunscreen of the moment! it’s not cheap, but i can feel it keeping my skin baby soft and wrinkle-free.

josie maran coconut watercolor cheek gelee, $22
a cooling gel-stain, these innovative blushes are packed with moisture and positively drench cheeks in a sheer and sort of perfect wash of color. i pat it on with my fingertips, blend, and enjoy 14 hours of continuous wear. water balloon fights and all.

coola liplux spf 15, $12
my lips are always prone to dryness, but in the summer they’re prone to sunburn as well. i refuse to settle for plain old chapstick so i love that coola’s liplux brings serious skincare and spf protection to my lip game. oh, and a peppermint-vanilla flavor that’s to die for.

lucy b lipgloss in pink bikini, $18
i know what you’re thinking: lip gloss is lip gloss. not so in this case as lucy b’s pale flamingo pink is a beautiful finishing touch complete with jojoba and vitamin e. it’s a lusciously smooth formula that’s not at all sticky – just perfectly pretty.

oscar de la renta sun protection stick spf 30, $26
necessary? no. effective? totally. fancy? oh, yes. i don’t know about you, but i’ve never seen a more beautiful sunscreen in all of my life. you’ll be pulling this little guy out nonstop to touch up ears, feet, and other small spots – if only to get a look at the gorgeous tube.

essie naughty nautical, $8
who says you can’t wear red, white and blue-green teal marine? this essie shade has not left my fingertips in weeks. i do love the way it shimmers! add a few glitter stars and seal with a top coat for the ultimate in completely chic patriotic nail art.

i’m off to warm up my tossing arm. happy birthday, america!

everyday eye essentials

everyday eye essentials

it has taken me a long time to learn how to dress up my eyes each morning, but the little tricks i have learned over the years really make a big difference in brightening my face and polishing off my whole look. my go to eye wardrobe is soft, neutral and sparkly. here are the essentials that help me give the windows to my soul their own special treatment:

simple’s revitalizing eye roll on, $11
this is the first thing i put on my face in the morning and i let it soak in / work its magic while i straighten my hair. the cool rollerball de-puffs as it massages my under eyes while cucumber, b5, and glycerin work to wake up my sleepy peepers.

chanel precision eyelash curler, $34
superior shape and spongy pad have made this my holy grail lash curler for over a year now. combine the perfect curler with these tips that i learned from refinery29’s recent video with james vincent and my lashes have never looked better.

mac paint pot in painterly, $18.50
i put this creamy shadow / lid primer on whether i am wearing shadow or not, because it prevents my foundation from creasing. layering shadow overtop locks things down until you’re ready to remove. (at which point i might recommend these little beauties!)

josie maran argan beautiful nudes, $36
this shadow quad features rich neutrals and one shadow liner. the shadows offer a variety of finishes (matte, iridescent, satin) in beautifully coordinated nudes so i can create endless looks that always look good together. it totally takes the guesswork out of eye makeup!

sephora collection pro visionary lash fan brush, $18
finally! a brush designed to make tightlining easier. dip this mini fan into your favorite black cream liner and stamp it right into your lash line for precise and simple definition. it emphasizes lashes and also doubles as a lash separator. you need this!

clinique instant lift for brows, $16.50
the ultimate in finishing touches, this double-ended product from clinique houses a natural-looking pencil to give fullness and intensity to brows and a pearly highlighter that creates contrast and adds a magic lift to your arches.

spring cleaning

spring cleaning

this spring, i’m cleaning up my act by upgrading some of the products i use to keep my body, skin, and hair fresh and happy. it’s nice to be nice to yourself and while i love the feeling of being scrubbed completely clean, it’s not always the best thing for my body. a lot of products with harsh cleansers are rough on skin, we know that over-shampooing is awful for your hair, and that the chemicals in many cleansers and removers can do more harm than good. i’m not the most obsessed with avoiding these things entirely, but i’ve found that making little changes are not only beneficial, but sometimes the gentler products work even better.

simple eye makeup remover, $6.99: i tend to scrub my eyes when i wash my face to get rid of the primer, shadow, and mascara that i wear daily. after i rubbed them raw a couple of weeks ago, i vowed to add a gentle eye makeup remover to my bedtime routine. i like simple’s version because it’s not at all oily or greasy and it’s free of dyes, perfumes, and irritants.

josie maran bear naked nail wipes, $9: my nails and cuticles are always left so dry after a run with typical polish remover. infused with argan oil, these nail wipes from josie maran leave my nails in perfect condition with no need for extra hydration. one pad cleans all ten nails and I’m left with the feeling that they are naturally nourished.

dr. sponge facial cleaning sponge, $8.50: these natural and biodegradable facial cleansing sponges are the coolest! coming in eight varieties to suit all skin types, they mildly exfoliate, leaving skin clean and fresh. the best part is that after you use it, you can squeeze the water out and use it to actually dry your face so there is no towel needed.

you smell paper hand soap, 3 for $8.75 (75 washes!): the hand soap in public bathrooms really grosses me out. as an aesthetically pleasing (and fun!) alternative, you smell paper hand soap requires just a few drops of water to magically transform into a perfect lather. hands are left smelling like fresh laundry and each pack is small enough to pack inside the smallest clutch.

marvis mouthwash concentrate, $22.50: my husband and i are big fans of a morning swish and we both love contemporary toothpaste brand, marvis. when they launched their new mouthwash concentrate, i know we’d love it. just like their toothpastes, this alcohol-free mouthwash is freshly innovative and it leaves my mouth with long-lasting peppermint taste.

lush no drought dry shampoo, $13.95: i have to wash my hair every other day and that’s only if I douse it in dry shampoo on day two. this version from lush absorbs excess oil and volumizes, but fresh ingredients make me feel a bit better about massaging it into my scalp.

deborah lippmann run the world (girls)

some of you may have seen this yesterday on facebook or twitter, but yesterday’s was my 500th blog post. i’m still in a bit of awe over that milestone! in celebration, i’m taking a bit of inspiration from deborah lippmann’s new “run the world (girls)” mini nail polish collection.

top: i kissed a girl (poppin’ pink), it girl (yellin’ yellow), and hollaback girl (outrageous orange)

bottom: nasty girl (flaming fuchsia) and party girl (sassy salmon)

the five neon shades are juicy and bright, with a matte finish to make them special (and more fun!) they are begging for you to break out your nail art tools and just aching to be included in some fun and fabulous color combinations.

in honor of my big 5-0-0 and deborah’s nod to girl power, i thought i’d share some lovely links to the ladies of the beauty biz who, along with deborah, keep me motivated and inspired to blog the pretty day after day.

who did i miss? who inspires you?

what’s in her bag?

when the super sweet justine of ‘short is the new black’ asked me to be a part of her ‘what’s in her bag?’ series, i was more than happy to oblige. the beauty blogosphere is such a wonderful place when you get to meet and share audiences with someone like miss justine. i hope you’ll click on over to her little spot on the web and take a peek at my dailies. wait until you see just how shockingly simple my beauty routine really is!

ps – since you’re here, you must love the glossarie! please visit this week’s allure beauty blogger awards challenge and vote for me – i’d be so grateful :) (you can vote once per day, now through friday, and did i mention you can win diamonds?!)

josie maran argan matchmaker powder foundation spf 20

for a smaller beauty brand, josie maran has been cranking out winner after winner in my book. the former model-turned-makeup-mogul has now created a self-adjusting powder foundation with the nourishing and hydrating benefits of argan oil … and there are so many things right with this product, i’m not quite sure where to begin!

first of all, it feels like heaven and magically disappears onto skin, creating the best powder match of any product to date. it mattifies my complicated combination bits, but isn’t drying or itchy like other powders. the coverage falls perfectly between sheer and medium and i just can’t stress enough what a pleasure it is to wear. pile all of those compliments into a formula that also comes complete with spf 20, and josie just hit gold with this flawless face in a compact.

note: this product is flying off shelves (my sephora was already out of the two lightest shades and they are currently out of stock online – make sure to request an email for when they’re back in action!) and while i don’t hesitate to gamble it will be around for awhile, you’ll want to get your hands on one of your very own asap.

josie maran argan matchmaker powder foundation spf 20 is available in three shades for $34 at sephora.
